October Neighborhood Profile: Hyde Park

A neighborhood with a lil' bit of everything.

By Zainab Karim (shutters soul contributing writer)

Where is Hyde Park?

Hyde Park is located on the Southside of the city. This expansive and culturally diverse community can be found east of Cottage Grove Ave between 51st and 60th street best known as Midway Plaisance or The Midway and extends all the way to Lake Michigan. The even numbered streets are almost exclusively residential while the odd numbered streets along with Lake Park avenue host majority of the businesses.

A Brief History

In 1853 a successful businessman by the name of Paul Cornell purchased 300 acres of land in the Chicago area between 51st and 55th street along the Illinois Railroad to attract businessmen and their families to the area. Cornell eventually convinced the Illinois Central Railroad to buy a part of the land as to build a train station to promote daily trips to the commercial core of Chicago and to his newly built hotel promptly called the Hyde Park House. Hyde Park holds a substantial share of Chicago’s history most notably as the host to the White City amusement park, the home of the University of Chicago, some of the most pristine architecture and more Nobel Prize winners in one area; 85 to be exact.

They called Hyde Park home
Muhammad Ali
Saul Bellow
Amelia Earhart
Marshall Fields
Hugh Heifner
Mahalia Jackson
Barack Obama
Harold Washington

New Checkerboard Lounge:

The original checkerboard lounge was located in Bronzeville and owned by the legendary Buddy Guy, it was seen as one of the nations most legendary blues venues. The lounge played host to blues legends Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters and even rockers like the Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin. When the club closed in 2003, to preserve the history of blues in the city the venue was moved to Hyde Park with much dismay from neighbors. The lounge now hosts many local acts and still has the feel of old time blues.

in most states, you cnnoat buy a vehicle until you are 18. you can provide the money, but it would have to be in a parent’s name. as for the cost of insurance, it depends on the make and model and year of the vehicle. a newer vehicle will be more expensive due to the additional coverages you would want such as comprehensive and collision as well as liability. if an older vehicle, it may be too expensive to purchase collision and/or comprehensive so you would just get liability. rates will vary from company to company with some being cheaper than others. also, if you have drivers education you can get a discount on liability, as well as for drug education, and multi-car discounts on your parent’s insurance.rather than buying a seperate policy, get it on your parents policy and you will be rated on their vehicle so you can drive it as well, though you inform the insurance company that you have a seperate vehicle that you will drive.don’t buy a car just to learn to be a better driver, but so you will have your own car. driving it will give you the advantage of getting more experience as well as provide you seperate transportation.

Just show them your latest rpoert card with your improved grades (most insurance companies give a discount with a 3.0 GPA) and they should give you a good student discount. Try this site to before you buy car insuranceHere you can get quotes from different car insurance companies in your area, its the best way to find an affordable car insurance with a reliable company.

You could keep it separate, but you uowldn’t want to.Married drivers are better risks and get better rates when the policies are combined.Keeping them separate introduces a coordination of coverage element that brings unnecessary confusion if there were an accident with both of them present.
